Orienteering

Thank you for your interest in Orienteering at HNI for 2025.  HNI has a proud reputation of being strong at orienteering in Hawkes Bay and nationally.   HNI are the 2022 holders of top school awards for Y7&8 Boys and Y7&8 Girls at NZ Orienteering Secondary Schools Championships. 

If you are keen to orienteer this year, the site to visit is Hawke’s Bay Orienteering Club (HBOC) www.hborienteering.com  

As a school, we compete in three local HB events – the School Sprint, Individual and Relay Championships.   HNI itself does not put on or run any events. 

The Hawke’s Bay Orienteering Club has events from now until the end of November.  If you are interested in competing in the School Events this year (HB Schools Sprint Champs/ Long Champs/ Relay Champs), you should go to as many  events as you can in preparation .  

Dates from HBOC for 2025

On the 2nd March , a  training day is  offered  at Riverlands, for all abilities as useful preparation especially for HB Long Champs, North Island and NZSS Champs.   10.30am - 1pm.

Schools Sprint Event - 23rd March             Schools Long Event - 4th May.         Schools Relay Event   - 22nd June  This event has been cancelled.

2025 NZSSO Championships - 11-13 July in Auckland  - competitors can usually travel and stay with the HNHS team - watch the student notices for up to date information.

Hawkes Bay Orienteering Club run Summer Series on a Wednesday evenings, for HBOC Club members only.

Bring / Wear  : Wear HNI PE uniform, running shoes, compass is optional but not necessary.  School has some loan compasses available.    

 Bring a drink bottle, snacks & a warm top/ jacket as needed. A whistle is needed for long & relay events.

Entry fee : $7  entry fee ($6 + $1 for SI card hireage)

Transport : own arrangement to & from event
