Coaching Development

Introduction:

NZC has outlined their desire that all coaches coaching cricket be equipped with the correct coaching qualifications to coach at a specific level the team they are coaching this season. Please note that the purpose of this process is to best ensure a safe environment for all participants. From all of  Hawke’s Bay Cricket, thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this process. There are 5 levels of coaching. 1. Smash Play (new initiative) Please have a look at the link: https://play.nzc.nz/ , (Info specifically targeted at schools) https://play.nzc.nz/teachers-and-kaiako 2. Foundation coach, 3. Advanced Foundation coach, 4. Development coach and 5. Advanced development coach. Please see attached our HBCA Coaching Pathway Summary(1). I have also attached the Framework that explains the registration process and what is required from the coaches old and new(2).  NZC use a system called Friendly Manager to manage /register and coordinate all cricket coaches. Please make sure that all coaches register on this system. Please use this link to register. Coaches Corner: https://www.nzc.nz/community/coaches-corner/register

Different Levels of Coaching Courses:

Attachments (3,4,5) are the different levels of coaching. Please have a look and identify your level of coaching. For all the different levels HBC will provide specific coaching courses to help and develop coaches at the different levels.  HBCA is very keen to use your local club as a Hub(7) with all the schools forming a relationship with their local club. My idea is to run specific coaching courses at the club that will include all schools. Coaching courses and dates will be finalised over the next few weeks.  All coaches must complete “The Welfare of Children and Vulnerable Adults” guidelines/modules Complete the online coaching modules for the appropriate coaching level.  Each of the courses is FREE of charge. Attachment (6) is about the different levels of umpiring online modules Foundation and Community courses. We would encourage all junior coaches to complete the Foundation online umpire course as well.

Club Cricket (Havelock North Junior Cricket Club)

Go onto our website www.havelocknorthcricket.co.nz and to click on the Junior registration tab.

We need more registrations in the Year 6 group as we only have 4 so far (we are looking for a manager for that team as well) and we would love to get more in the Year 7 group so we can have 2 teams. We also need more Year 8’s.

Club clothing

We have a good supply of our awesome Club gear so please come and have a look at it on Friday nights. We will also look to place another order of gear as supplies run out or when we don’t have sizes or items in stock. All sales are at cost to the Club but we receive a 10% rebate on all sales as a credit for the following year. I will post on Facebook the images and pricing for this gear shortly.

Communication

During the year teams will mainly be contacted by their Team managers/coaches. Club communications to members will be done through those managers/coaches but primarily we will put up information on the Junior Facebook page or Club Facebook page. This will include cancellations, important dates, results and any other information. If you have photos of your teams please put these up on the pages and share them. The pages are named,

CricHQ V playHQ

Some of you may be aware that NZ Cricket is pushing the use of a new cricket scoring and administration platform called playHQ. It is an unproven system so far and whilst there some advantages to it in the long term it is not currently proven or expected to have all that cricket needs from it for a few years. The HB Cricket Board has made the decision to continue with the proven criqHQ system for this season with a view to moving over to playHQ once later. This decision was not made lightly by the HB Cricket Board but with the huge tournaments run here in Labour weekend, October School holidays and in the January Cricket camps, it was felt that the current system would continue to be used.

NEW Junior Club playing shirts

The Club has been successful in receiving a funding grant from the Lion Foundation for 160 Junior playing shirts. These shirts will be similar to the Senior Club playing shirts and will have our Club sponsors names on them. They look fantastic and will be amazing for all teams.

Every shirt will have a different number and the shirt will be issued to each player to look after for the whole season. They will remain owned by the Club and must be returned to coaches at the end of the season. Please ensure they are looked after well as they are costing the Club $8500. Velcro will pull the material, so care is needed.

Once they have arrived I will put up a post on the Club Facebook pages. They will be arriving in the next 2-3 weeks.

Second Hand Cricket sale

Many families have used gear or gear they will not use which may be useful to other families and players. This is especially the case for kids starting and playing cricket for the first time for a Club. We will look to have a 2nd hand cricket gear sale at one of our Friday night coaching sessions and will let you know a date and more details soon.

Friday night coaching

We are looking to continue to run this very successful programme before and after Christmas. We should have Bevan Small able to run most of these sessions but we will also have our South African overseas pro, Kian Schwartz helping coach the juniors. He is a top order batsman and medium paced bowler who is currently playing in England. He is also a South African Indoor Cricket representative. We are also hoping to have 1 or 2 of our High school players coming along to coach on Fridays, as well as senior mens and womens players. We have heaps of cool prizes for these sessions this season. At this stage we are looking to run these sessions on the following dates:

This year we are running this as follows.

4.30pm to 5.30pm - Girls coaching. (run by Bevan, Kian, Tim O’Brien and senior female players)

5.30pm to 7.00pm  - all Juniors coaching (boys and girls Year 4 to 8/9/10). This will be run by Bevan and Kian and we are looking to pay our Year 12/13’s and have volunteers from the Senior squads and our CD players when available.

Masterclass sessions - Year 8/9/10

We are starting a new initiative for the Junior Club targeting our Year 8/9/10 kids. As they get older some of this age are looking for a bit more than the drills and skills we run on a Friday. We want to introduce the new Masterclass sessions for this age. These ages can still come along for the Friday coaching sessions but we will look to hold two Masterclass sessions before Christmas and two afterwards.

We will look to target a distinct cricket skill and have some of our coaches and top players run the session for these older kids. An example would be a fast bowling focus where we get Joey Field, Kian Schwartz (South African player), Bevan Small and Ben Wheeler to run the session. It would include training, preparation, warm-up, strategy, planning, bowling fields and to look at how to face that bowling as a batsman. We would run a spin bowling session for spin bowlers and how to bat against spin. A batting masterclass and fielding masterclass will also be run.

More to come on this.

Girls coaching

We are looking to run either separate sessions just for girls from Year 4 to Year 10 or have them together going around the circuit at the Friday sessions. We have a couple of cricketing fathers who are keen to run this for the girls and we will also provide some of our Senior women players to help as well as the Club coaches.

Our intention is to have a Superleague girls team and to enter 1 or 2 girls teams into the Cricket camps in January 2023.

HNCC Junior Scholarship

The Club committee has created a scholarship that ideally targets Intermediate aged club members who will be nominated by their Club coaches or have been identified and nominated by our Club coaches. They will stand out as talented cricket players who have strong potential but are also role models with their peers and have a great attitude towards the Club values. The committee will put out more details about these scholarships to the team managers/coaches in due course.

The nominations are to be made to the committee by the end of February 2023 with the successful nominees awarded their scholarships at the Junior prize giving. The scholarship will apply and can be used for the following season.

The recipients will receive the following

1. Free Club membership - approx. value $90

2. a free new Club training top - value $40

3. 6 Free 1 hour one on one coaching sessions with one of our quality club coaches - value of $300 (Sponsored by Aaron Brittin and Shanley & Co.

4. a discount on a custom made Laver & Wood bat of at least $100

The committee has awarded two winners of this scholarship from last season as follows.

Jenna Allison - Boys Year 9/10 and Womens Senior team in 2021/22

Fergus Benefield - Boys Year 7 team 2021/22

Holiday coaching camps

We will hold these again in January as a lead up to the Camps for split age groups. Two separate camps for Year 4/5/6 & Year 7/8. These will be run by Bevan, Kian & Brad along with other senior club players as coaches. They will be held at Anderson Park. Dates are still to be confirmed.

Club Opening night

After the weather ruined this event last year we are hoping that the HB weather will look after us this year. We are looking to hold this on Friday 28th October. We will start with our Junior coaching from 3.30pm to 4.45pm, junior prize giving from last season until 5pm and then the Club has a home T20 game for Prems. We will put on free food, open the bar and have music and raffles.

We want this to be a whole Club season launch and to have junior players and their families to stay on after the coaching session to have a picnic dinner, a cold beverage and to watch some of the Premier T20 game. A junior player will be selected as a 12th man for the Premier mens team, to carry drinks and be part of the team at this T20 game.

Please put this out to your families so they can put it into their diaries.

Private cricket coaching - Juniors

We are fortunate as a Club to have some of the best players and coaches in the HB. These include Joey Field and Brad Schmulian who are both CD Stags, Bevan Small, Kian Schwartz (South African pro), Will Clark and others.

If you are interested in getting some coaching for your son or daughter please contact Steve Field for details.

Thanks
