Threats
The major threat to coral is global climate change. In particular, temperature extremes have led to coral bleaching and increased their susceptibility to disease. Coral disease is regarded as a serious threat to coral reefs worldwide and a major cause of reef deterioration. Coral bleaching and ocean acidification place coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific at a high risk of collapse.
Conservation
Stony coral is included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix II.
