Threats

While many sharks are killed deliberately for their fins, which are made into shark fin soup, shark meat is also popular in many parts of the world. Some sharks also die in fishing nets set for other fish. Sharks tend to be long-lived and relatively slow in reproduction, making them particularly vulnerable to overfishing.

Conservation

Some shark species are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix I or Appendix II.
