Threats

The primary threat to seahorses is fisheries throughout its range in Asia. These fisheries, specifically trawl fisheries, are known to cause substantial damage to the habitats of seahorses. A high demand for seahorses in traditional Chinese medicine is also a threat to the species.

Conservation

Seahorses are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix II.
