Threats

Sika deer has been hunted widely in China, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan for meat and antler velvet for use in traditional Chinese medicine. A few subspecies in China have become extinct in the wild as a result of hunting and habitat conversion for agriculture.

The species is Class I protected species in the ‘List of endangered and protected species of China’.
