Habitat of the monitor lizards is lost due to land reclamation and water pollution. Therefore, the number of lizards has decreased and the species needs conservation.

Monitor lizards are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix II.
