Threats

Hippos rely on freshwater habitats, which are destroyed due to human agricultural activities. Another primary threat is illegal and unregulated hunting for meat and ivory. Illegal hippo hunting is found to be particularly high in areas of civil unrest in Africa.

Conservation

Hippos are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix II.
