Threats

Environmental destruction by elephants and overdevelopment of land by humans cause habitat loss of elephants and lead to habitat fragmentation which has a negative effect on mating and breeding. In the past, humans hunted elephants for their ivory for commercial use, which is one of the reasons for the decrease in the number of elephants.

Conservation

Elephants are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix I, and some species are included in Appendix II.
