Threats

This species has been taken incidentally by fishermen and sold on the market. However, massive catches have been discovered recently all over the world for their gill plates, which are believed to have medicinal value in traditional Chinese medicine.

Conservation

Devil rays are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix II.
