Cheetah

Threats

Habitat loss and fragmentation have been identified as primary threats. Cheetahs are particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation as they are wide-ranging carnivorous animals which never share their territories with others.

Cheetahs are hunted for their skins. They are the predators of livestock that can be killed by farmers in retaliation. Unregulated tourism has the capacity to threaten the cheetah population as large numbers of tourist vehicles can lead to a number of negative effects to cheetahs.

Conservation

Cheetahs are included in the ‘Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)’ Appendix I.
