Course Description

This course is designed to provide a broad understanding of the US health care system and an introduction to the roles of various members of the health care team. Current trends in healthcare delivery are briefly discussed. Selected moral, ethical and legal medical dilemmas are included.

1. Understand and describe the current US Health care delivery system, as well as proposed reform measures.

2. Identify and describe healthcare workers and their functions.

3. Develop a greater understanding and awareness of healthcare workers

4. Increase awareness and understanding of issues, trends, and ethics related to healthcare.

1. Define and discuss in class and on assignments the services, purposes, function, and economics of the health care system.

2. Identify health care workers and provide titles, functions, and education requirements of each.

3. Identify characteristics of and the need for a health care team.

4. Define confidentiality and patient's rights.

5. Identify issues that might be encountered on the job: cost, economics, insurance, lawsuits/malpractice, rural/urban, worker shortages/abundance.
