Lizards will go home with
A tank
A basking lamp or heat pad
A water dish
A food dish
Crickets or mealworms.
Pop up playpen (Lizzy)
Feeding
Bolt and Lizzy are fed once in the morning. Bolt eats 100% Insects. Bolt eats about 5 mealworms or crickets in a day, though he prefers mealworms. Lizzy is fed once in the morning. Her diet is 80% leafy greens and 20% insects. In the morning I feed her torn up endive or romaine lettuce in her feeding dish. I try to tear the pieces to about the size of a quarter or smaller. I will also give her 10 insects, usually about 6 crickets and 4 mealworms. The crickets and mealworms do not live long and some will die in the cricket carrier. I will clean this when she returns. Bolt has been known to eat less on weekends away from the school. This is fine.
Heat
Lizzy has a heat lamp. The heat lamp should be turned on between 8am - 6pm. It does not need to be the exact times.
Bolt has a heat pad that should be on at all times.
Cleaning
Bolt has a machine washable fabric mat that I spot clean between washes. Lizzy’s tank is lined with paper towels. She will defecate on the towels. Please replace the area that is soiled. Lizzy has been known to have an anxious belly and she is getting used to transitions and her travel tank. She may not poop while visiting your home. This is fine. If you want to support her digestion, you can place her in a shallow warm water bath. I usually use a tupperware and let her sit for about 5 minutes supervised. Don’t hold her too much after a bath as she may poop on you.
Handling
Our lizards are usually pretty calm when being handled. They need to feel supported across the whole body on the belly side. I usually place Lizzy on my chest by my shoulder and she will sit there. They have never bit anyone but lizards will sometimes bite when they feel frightened.
Lizzy has a popup playpen. She can climb out of this so please supervise her in this. If you want to “play” with her, she has a treat ball where you can place some leafy greens and up to 3 mealworms. She will push it around trying to get out the snacks.
