While we were looking at our personas, we asked ourselves whether all those people will ever install a tracking app, even though the government will require the population to do so and the media will stress out the importance of it in the COVID-19 fight.
In particular, there were a couple of personas who are more likely to believe 5G is accountable for the outbreak (CNN, “Conspiracy linking 5G to coronavirus”), than to trust national authorities.
We needed to embrace all the positive reinforcements for people behavior that would lead to a spontaneous adoption.
Let us elaborate a bit on this. We’ve seen popping up in our news feed different solutions and proposals who got media attention and visibility. The approaches were different, but one sentence was there in most of the articles and statements we read: “downloading the app will be on a volunteering basis and it is going to work only if a certain amount of people will do it”.
If you’re familiar with product development, you know there’s only one thing for sure: people will not use your product unless they understand it and see a higher value exceeding its costs (monetary, psychological, etc).
It will be key to give Citizens a reason to download the app and continuously be motivated to use it in good faith.
Thus, we thought of using the app as a means to grant access to services people want to have or places people want to go. To make it very practical here, think of you going to a bar, entering the venue would be only possible by showing a badge, in the app, that certifies you as safe.
In that way bar owners can advertise their place as safe harbour and people would tend to go more to certified safe places rather, rewarding owners.
A similar case could be done for an office, the employer can protect employees but letting in the building only safe people. Local authorities would be happy to have open facilities that check people daily when they reach the office, and employers will enjoy better business. These positive effects should foster the adoption and strengthen the efficiency of the whole prevention system.
