Hessdalen is a UFO hotshot in Norway.

Project Hessdalen

Established in 1983 to study the phenomena.
In 1998 The Blue Box was installed: the world's first automated Anomaly Detection and Recording System.

This website offers free access to all  reports, photos, videos & live streams from the valley!

In 2023 we started a new international research initiative and registered as a non-profit organization.

You can now Sign up for the Field Trip Weekend in September

What we do

Collect data

We have the Blue Box talking pictures and video every night. Everything is saved and the interesting captures are manually put on the web. We hope, one day, to get an AI model trained on all the historical data.

We have two live-streaming low resolution cameras on YouTube. We have no capture of these streams - but if we could have an anomaly detection system - we could try to save the recording for that day.

We just got two high-resolution cameras from the University of Würzburg. This does have an AI system - and we are eager to learn more about this system!

We have managed to collect some money to upgrade equipment in the Blue Box - where the big goal is triangulation. But then we need more than one location - and we are discussing 3 other locations that have both power and internet.

And finally - we do plan to use other anomaly detection systems too - not just cameras.

If you think you can help - please join us!

The Developer Program is a vital part of this effort - we want the data to be available online - so we need help to set up the systems: collecting data from instruments, storing this on the cloud, making it available for you and researchers.

But if you are more into construction - help us plan and build the next Box for our Anomaly Detection and Recording System (ADRS)

Inspire research

Because Hessdalen has been in the media for over 40 years - this site is visited by more than 90 countries every month - so everybody interested in UFOs/UAPs knows about Project Hessdalen.

The first report from 1984, which employed a comprehensive suite of scientific instruments including  cameras, seismograph, radar, laser, magnetometer, geiger counter and IR-viewer, remains a valuable resource.
It documented 53 reports of the "Hessdalen Phenomena" during the 18-day field trip and spurred research efforts from scientists around the world.  (For more details, visit the 'Articles and Reports' page)

Operation Arctic Seals

Last year (June 2023), a team headed by Rune Røstad decided to located an unknown object in Djupsjøen and this February 20th the team dived down to take samples from the object.
Rune has said that "There will be another operation in the summer".

More research to come

We have more research project requests currently being formulated and two are from team-members:

Mathias Tømmervold (Norway) will say in the valley for 3 months to get "close to the phenomena".

David de Sousa Seixas (Portugal) is writing an application to study the phenomena.

We want to facilitate and collect the data for scientists interested in doing research on the Hessdalen Phenomena.

Create awareness

Some have experienced these phenomena and continue to peruse an answer to the question - what is this!

Erling P. Strand was lucky - he drove up to Hessdalen and saw it the first night!

Back at work - telling his colleagues he wanted to study this - he was advised not to
- but he did anyway!

Both residents and visitors who have told about their experiences have been distrusted and ridiculed, but 40 years later there are still new witness reports.

The Phenomena are still there.

Some have not experienced these phenomena but want to have answers to some questions:

Why Hessdalen?

There are many hotspots around the world, but this valley have 25 years with an automated surveillance system documenting the persistent nature of the phenomena

If we want to study UFOs/UAPs then Hessdalen is the Lab - we just need better equipment.

If we do not get help from the government, the military or the academia - we will tell the world - and ask the public to donate or pay a small membership fee - and we will collect data and do the research our self.

What we will get

Dr. Jim Segala from Experiencer Studies just donated Mupas Macro and Mupas Mini to Project Hessdalen!
The equipment will be installed during the summer months and operational before our Field Trip Weekend / Conference in September.

Mupas mini (above)

Mupas macro >

With the Mupas Online Portal it will be possible to look into the data being gathered from Hessdalen
- and request notifications of anomalous events.

We have had a long process discussing what camera to purchase and what computer to use. That is now decided.

We have used 8 months to collect the money needed - so thank you all for your donations via ko-fi or spleis.

Dahua 8MP Enhanced Night Color

This camera has 8MP (3840 x 2160) at 30 fps, 2.8 mm Fixed Lens and a Ultra Wide Dynamic Range.

Workstation Pro - R CPU Intensive

The PC is a Windows 11 Pro, Ryzen 9 5950X, Nvidia T1000, 32GB ECC, 1.5TB SSD.

There is still a lot of work to be done!
Once we receive the equipment - it must be configured and installed in the BlueBox. This involves cables and routers - even climbing up the mast to remove old and unused equipment - then attach the new camera.

This equipment upgrade will enable us to work on the next goals:

Triangulation is still a goal
but we need more time to get the software working - and we can't wait!

What about the two cameras from the University of Würtburg?
The main purpose for these cameras is to train the AI model for the anomalous event detection.  The AI is trained locally on the machine using the camera feeds, and we don't want to load this device by streaming to the web.

Following the research plan
We are still on First Level: Reactivating and Refurbishing the Old Instruments. This is the first upgrade of the BlueBox installation, we need more upgrades and w e need equipment for The second observatory too.

So please keep supporting our work.

Support our work:

Project Hessdalen is a
non-profit organization.

We are all volunteers trying to collect data and making this available to researchers around the world.

The team is spending a lot of time and money to make this happen
- but we need your help!

Events

Discord Online Events

Join discord to get notifications about upcoming online stage events.

Back in October we had "The stories of local eyewitnesses from Hessdalen" and Helge Otterå as a guest.

In November our guest was Steven D. Reigstad telling us about his personal experience as a MUFON Certified Field Investigator.

We plan an event telling about the new camera system from the university of Würzburg - soon!

Field Trip Weekend

This is the big event this year:
A field trip / conference.

Two nights during the weekend 6 - 8th of September,
we will set up multiple camps and use cameras and devices and try to detect the phenomena.

During the day you will get presentations and panel discussions - and get to know the valley, the team and the equipment we are using.

Don't forget to sign up!

Monthly Status Meetings

This is for team-members but many times anyone interested in joining have been invited.

Even here we may have guests - like last time when Robert Shiepe from Custodian File had a presentation.

Join discord to get notifications about upcoming status meetings if you are interested.

Developer Meetings

We need help to develop both software and hardware!

The Developer Program has started on-boarding for web-developers. But we also need breakout sessions about AI-training, camera equipment, drone automation and more!

Join the program to gain experience and learn from an interdisciplinary collaboration!

The team

Massimo Teodorani

Our scientific consultant

Magnus Holm

Technical Director

The team has more than 30 members. Some are living in the valley - like Bjørn, Frank and Jan. But we have members from Germany, Italy, Portugal and Ireland.

In this picture we are in Hessdalen during a Meet & Greet, in August 2023.

We hope most of the team can meet during the annual meeting one day before the Field Trip Weekend in September.
