At the all school end of year assembly, Rabbi Anne Ebersman delivered these words to introduce this video:
Before we end the school year, we would like to send you off with some words of blessing. Rav Kook, the first chief rabbi of Israel, once said,
הישן יתחדש והחדש יתקדש
The ancient will be made new and the new will be made holy. We decided to bless you by taking very ancient very holy words of blessing and connecting them to much newer words, which, words that when you hear them, I think you will agree are also words of blessing. So we hope you will enjoy this mashup of Birkat Cohanim, the priestly blessing, the oldest words of blessing that the Jewish people has, and some lyrics from the musical Dear Evan Hansen. I first thought of this idea when I was running in the park after we first went remote and a song from Dear Evan Hansen came up on my Spotify list. I was crying so hard I had to stop running, because it summed up exactly what I wanted to be able to say to each one of my students: You are not alone.
