As school is coming to an end and summer is right around the corner, most of us are going back to spending lots of our free time on social media. While this can be a good thing since we can now relax and communicate with our friends, social media also has some negative effects that might ruin the quality of our free time. Here is why I think this summer we should all spend a little less time glued to our phones, and more time besides our dear ones or even by ourselves.
Social media is often used as a form of escapism that can do more harm than good. We often fall into this trap of having to fit into all the standards portrayed on the internet and constantly trying to change ourselves to be perfect and please others. But no one is perfect and everyone has their own ups and downs. We are also regularly updated on the news, creating a fear of missing out for many people, as they are pressured to be up to date with everything that happened. These qualities of social media negatively impact our lives and our mindset. At first, while trying to detach from social apps, you might feel out of the loop, but it might be for the better as there’s no overload of information and you still have your friends and families to fill you in on important news.
Reclaim your sense of self and reconnect with the real world. Focusing more on yourself and your loved ones instead of random people on the internet is a way better method of spending your time. You’ll have more free time in which you could try out new things or find new potential hobbies, actually do the things that you wanted to pursue for a long time but you weren’t able to, such as exercising, reading a new book, drawing or even exploring the city’s museums or parks and attending various events. You can become way more productive and improve your sense of perspective by engaging in yourself, your interests, and the world around you.
Enjoy the moment and live for yourself. Learn to love and be yourself. You’ll be able to achieve that harmony in life when you’ll be able to distinguish what affects you negatively and what truly brings you joy.
“If you try to be someone else, you’ll become nobody at all. The only great person you have the possibility of becoming is the greatest version of yourself, and that is a pretty great person.”
