Preparing for the school year

Know your students

  • Be sure to contact student/family before students first day to accomplish the following:

    • Note: A school may wish to send out a one call to all families giving instructions on how to give contact information to the school so the following can be accomplished:

    • Review class roster and ensure you have accurate contact information for each student in Infinite Campus.

    • Determine technology and support of each student. For example, does the student have internet access, a chromebook, etc.…

    • Ensure students and families understand the common form of communication you and your schools is using. For example, Remind 101, DOJO, One Call, etc.…

    • Relay information such as day/times for picking up chromebook's, video resources on how to use them, how to access Google Classroom, etc. Basically whatever the family must know in order to start the school year.

    • Ensure families know the best way to contact you.

      • What it could look like:

        • Create your welcome message. This can be on your website, email to parents, remind 101, etc.…

        • Create times for parents/students to meet with you virtually or in person.

Planning for your classes

  • Locate and gather curriculum resources which support content within your curriculum map.

    • Ensure you are comfortable with appropriate tech tools, knowing their purpose and how to use them. The focus should be on research based strategies not the tech. Tech tools link

  • Prepare information to inform students and families about what will be learned.

    • This could be done every four to six weeks. (KDE also has standards family guides and resources) KDE Example Link

  • Note any areas where you anticipate needing supplemental resources for your instruction.

    • Examples might be Zearn, Khan Academy, iReady, Apex tutorials, etc.… Although you will not have the data until school starts, you can be thinking about how you will use supplemental resources to provide kids additional support. What that might look like link

  • If working with a co-teacher, ensure you have set aside time to meet and plan.
