Plan minimum of 3 designs for a combined pinch pot lidded form, exploring surface variation of form to create interest.
You will be starting with an “egg”. Consider how you can alter it to make it interesting. Consider possibilities/limitations of media and form when planning.
Plan lid design and finial (if needed) that is unified with form. Lid can be no smaller than 1”x1” for functionality.
Design should be an exercise in manipulation of form using only hands/paddles. Additional clay may be used to add a finial to the lid for functionality.
Start with 2 equal sized pieces of clay which should create 2 forms a minimum of 3” each. Correctly constructed forms should be 1/4-3/8” thick throughout with vertical sides and controlled opening. Finished form should be 4-5” in height.
Let each half slightly stiffen before joining. If you join them too soon, the form might collapse or puddle at the base.
Once the form is constructed, consider ways to vary the surface by manipulating the clay. Only use hands and paddles to form the clay. If paddling, do not over paddle. This will cause the form to become too thick which may lead to cracking/exploding.
Smooth all nicks, dents, tool marks and other unintentional marks from form before cutting the lid.
Plan the lid so that it is unified with the form. Only cut the lid when your clay is stiff enough (leather hard). If clay moves or dents easily, it’s too soft. Cut a lid using the “pumpkin cut” method. Make sure lid fits form without sliding off or falling through the opening. Add a finial (if necessary). Monitor lid as form dries to make sure it does not become stuck in the opening (this shouldn’t happen if the lid is cut at the proper stage of dryness).
Create 2 different pots. You can design them as a set or as individual pieces.
