Visual Arts
6th, 7th, & 8th Grade
Welcome to the wonderful world of visual arts!
About the Course
Behind every creative professional is a young person who was inspired to express thoughts, ideas and feelings with visual arts.
Standards for Visual Arts Comp. I provides a comprehensive introduction to the Visual Arts at the High School level. These standards should be met as a prerequisite for subsequent Visual Arts course work. Component outcomes and suggested unit sequences always include at least one or more of the following six Design Elements: Line, Color, Shape, and Form, Texture, Space, and Value; and, seven Design Principles: Unity, Balance, Rhythm, Repetition, Variety, Emphasis, and Proportion.
Students will have homework at various points during the semester. Homework due dates are determined by the teacher and will be given to all students. If there is a holiday when an assignment is due, it should be turned in the day the student returns to my class. Students will also write critiques of their art work and the art work of other students. Critiques should be at least two paragraphs using the formal elements of critiquing.
Students will also receive grades daily for classwork. A rubric will be given outlining how classwork grades are given.
Periodically notebooks and sketchbook will be taken up and assessed by the teacher. I will be assessing the range and depth of knowledge be drawn in a student’s visual/verbal journals (sketchbook) to ensure they are meeting the requirements of the standards.
Grading Scale
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 74-79
D = 70-73
F = Below 70
Missing/Late Assignment Policy
***If you miss a class day, it is your responsibility to get missing work! You can do this by either, going on google Classroom or by asking me at the end of class. ***
If you miss class due to OSS/ISS, you are responsible to get all missing work. You will be required to complete this work. Depending on how many class days miss will determine how many additional days you will have AT HOME to complete this assignment (ie if you get 3 days OSS and you miss 2 class days, you will get two additional days at home to complete that assignment).
EVERYDAY an assignment is late, you will lose 5 points per day before I begin to grade the assignment. PLEASE get your assignments in on time!

About me
My name is Darsha Jackson and I am your Visual Arts, Comprehensive I and Journalism I teacher. Along with this, I also am the advisor for Locust Grove Middle School's Yearbook!
I have been teaching for almost 6 years and out of those 6 years, I have taught at LGMS for 2 years. In these years, this is my first year teaching a class outside of art however, I am truly excited to share an immersive school year with you all.
Self-taught, I have been able to challenge myself along with students to be the best artist possible and for that students have found my class to be one of escaping.
My background includes a BA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design, a Master's Degree in Marketing, and I am certified in UX/UI Design.
This year, my goal is to challenge all of my students to create art they did not think was possible! With all new projects and a refreshing outlook on what this class can offer, this year will be one that stands out!
