Science
Grade 6-8 | Telling is Not Teaching
Why "tell" your students when you can create opportunities for them to grapple with and discover the important elements of science as aligned to HTLS and the Balanced Model for Science Instruction?
Use scientific arguments to engage learners, tap into their curiosity, and challenge them to think critically in a highly effective science classroom.
Participants will engage in strategies to create engaging learning opportunities for students to preview, ponder, and predict ideas related to critical content. Students remember what they do!
Support claims with evidence
Preview and predict scientific concepts with images and graphs
Introduce concepts in engaging ways leading to increased depth and rigor
Experience a variety of techniques to engage learners to pique their interest and create a "need to know."
Grade 6-8 | Read. Write. Science!
Students who read and write well make great science learners! In this session, we'll look at literacy learning cycles that build reading and writing skills directly into science instruction, in ways that support HTLS and the HCS Balanced Model for Science Instruction. You will leave with a systemic approach for integrating literacy and science, along with specific scaffolds that will support both reading and writing.
Participants will learn to structure literacy learning cycles for their students, so that students are able to use text to support their learning. Teachers will leave with specific strategies for scaffolding when students struggle to read or get started with writing.
Grade 6-8 | Science + Literacy = Sensemaking
We know student engagement is critical to learning, so how can we leverage the science and engineering practices to engage middle school learners with respect to the HCS Balanced Model for Science Instruction and the highly effective science classroom? Let's explore the intersection of science and literacy as we obtain, evaluate, and communicate information together in this session.
How can we design instruction so that students actually want to read informational text? We will focus on how we can provide meaningful literacy and science connections in the middle school classroom by engaging with phenomena. How can we help students make sense of science? Research shows that science supports literacy, and resources and programs that successfully integrate science and literacy are key to ensuring that students have access to science. Through integration, we engage students in opportunities to make sense of science concepts.
Join me for strategies, techniques, and resources that you can use in your classroom TODAY!
Grade 9-12 | Argue from Evidence with Confidence
During this session, teachers will work through classroom activities grounded in the science practice of arguing from evidence with respect to the HCS Balanced Model for Science Instruction. While experiencing these activities, teachers will also consider ways they can use, adapt, and revise these materials to make them work for their classrooms. Through the activities, the session will also focus on instructional techniques aimed at fostering and sustaining students' science talk and engagement.
Attendees will leave with clear and concise meaning of argumentation, along with strategies, activities, and templates to help students define and construct arguments in the highly effective science classroom.
Grade 9-12 | Making Sense of Balanced Three-Dimensional High School Science
This session will allow teachers an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of balanced three-dimensional science teaching and learning that is centered around real-world phenomena and designing solutions in the science classroom. Participants will experience strategies for engaging students in science and engineering practices using cross-cutting concepts, as aligned to the HCS Balanced Model for Science Instruction, while building lessons around storylines.
Participants will walk away with phenomena and storylines aligned to HTLS and strategies to use when engaging students in sense-making in the highly effective science classroom.
Grade 9-12 | Boosting Thinking in the High School Science Classroom
If we want students engaged in meaningful thinking, we must model, teach, and practice ways to think strategically around science content. If students are not thinking, they are not learning.
This session will provide teachers practical ways to create a classroom culture where students are motivated by curiosity to make meaning of science learning. In addition, the critical importance of aligning instruction to the complexity of HTLS and the HCS Balanced Model for Science Instruction will be addressed.
Participants will walk away with modeling prompts and strategies to create curiosity and questioning opportunities to boost student thinking in the highly effective science classroom.
Social Studies
Grade 6-12 | The Highly Effective Social Studies Classroom: Techniques to Engage Students in Higher Order Thinking and Effective Writing
In this session participants will review the Balanced Instructional Model, Social Studies Information Processing Skills, and the HTLS. Participants will explore how to make meaning of the standards and effectively align instructional resources and strategies to the rigor of the standards with a focus on students “doing” Social Studies. Participants will learn specific strategies which can be used to foster learning engagement and higher order thinking. Lastly, participants will explore strategies to connect higher order thinking and skills development to effective Social Studies writing.
Participants will leave with specific strategies which foster a skills-focused highly engaged social studies learning environment. Participants will be able to make meaning of the HTLS, align teaching strategies, align resources, and effectively utilize the resources in Henry Connects.
Elementary Advanced Learning (K-5)| Using Depth and Complexity to Support the Standards-based Resource Classroom (virtual)
Participants will continue to build on developing lessons for their standards-based resource classrooms. During the session, participants will use the Depth and Complexity icons to create lessons that deepen gifted students' understanding of standards covered in the core content areas.
