Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic practices to plan and create works of art.
RESPONDING
Engage in the process of art criticism to make meaning and increase visual literacy.
CONCEPTS
How can we decode complex artworks to uncover multifaceted meanings and the artist's intent?
How do artists synthesize knowledge of art traditions, risk, and personal artistic vision to create original work?
Divide into small groups. Each group should have a copy (physical or digital) of the image. Analyze the image. Record responses in a sketchbook. Note the elements and principles the artist used, the mood conveyed, and the media used. Ask: What do you see? What is the message of the artwork? What evidence in the image supports your interpretation? Combine groups and compare images and analyses.
Each group should have a black-and-white copy (physical or digital) of the image. Discuss what might distract someone from seeing all of the information provided in the image. Discuss the following prompts: How does removing the color change what you see? Do you notice anything new?
Subtract something else from the image using scissors, a craft knife, or a digital tool. Discuss the observations.
Continue subtracting elements. Remove the main subject, all people, etc. Discuss how the changes affect what is seen.
Discuss the ways dissecting the image removes decisions that the artist made. Consider the impact of altering color choices, removing the subject matter, etc. In a sketchbook, record the decisions the artist made. Include notes about the media and processes, colors, scale, and other formal elements, as well as content. Note intentional omissions and considerations of audience and display method or venue.
Now Trade!
Select a personal artwork that is complete or in progress. Prioritize choosing a piece that communicates a specific concept, idea, or meaning.
Trade artworks with a classmate and practice reading the artwork. Share responses and evidence. Discuss areas of confusion. Determine where the viewer needs to improve their visual reading skills and where the artist needs revisions.
Complete necessary revisions based on the analysis.
Take a picture of or sketch the completed work and critically analyze it through annotation. Identify at least three pieces of content and what they show evidence of using brackets. Identify at least three intentionally missing things and what this choice is evidence of.
