Brainstorm the concept of “change” as a class or in small groups. Reflect upon memory or personal history to inspire the artwork. Collect images, maps, or other visual evidence to support the idea generation process.
Generate multiple ideas from narrative brainstorming. Use visual evidence as inspiration, if available. Produce multiple thumbnail concept sketches for the final composition. Refine ideas for the artwork with consideration for scale, space, and concept portrayal.
Paint several swatches to convey the mood of the story and allow for contrast in color, value, shape, and texture. Add white, black, grey, and analogous colors to create rich hues. Create textural variation in each color through different brush strokes.
Sketch out shapes on painted papers or collage materials to scale and with consideration for the entire space on each poster board sheet. Assemble the pieces to create the story being told with consideration for contrast in color, value, shape, and texture.
Reflect on the layout of pieces to ensure they activate the space and portray the narrative. Paste the pieces into place, starting with the background and working to the front. Maintain craftsmanship.
Refine and add drawn details or small cutouts to extend the final piece. Decide where to add elements such as pattern, shading, and small details to enhance the meaning of the artwork.
Reflect on the artwork by writing an artist statement.
