Gather objects from nature. Draw thumbnail sketches of different groupings and compositions of natural objects. Pull from past experiences and observations. Consider the imagery and beauty within natural elements.
Explore a variety of oil pastel techniques. Determine which techniques give a painterly effect. Experiment with blending, smudging, and overlapping.
Begin to draw three chosen subjects from nature with pencil. Practice contour line drawing as needed in a sketchbook prior to or during creation of final image. Use the Tips for Drawing from Observation resource as a reference.
Add color, beginning with using pastels that are lighter in color than the final desired colors. Use blending techniques. Fill in the background spaces, considering contrast and negative and positive spaces.
Continue to build and add oil pastel to the main areas of the subject. Blend oil pastels in a variety of ways to achieve different effects. Continue to conduct media experimentation in a sketchbook or using the Material Testing Grid as needed.
Add in a final layer of oil pastel to add details, emphasis, and contrast.
Present and display final artwork. Engage in a critique with peers by giving and receiving constructive feedback. Utilize the Constructive Critique and Questions for Critiques assessments for support.
