Practice techniques (e.g. direct observation, compositional development, investigation of artistic research).
Apply compositional design concepts (e.g. elements and principles, activating negative space, visual weight, rule of thirds, color theories).
PRESENTING
Plan, prepare, and present works of art for exhibition in school, virtual environment, and/or portfolio presentation.
CONCEPTS
How do artists synthesize inspiration, conceptual frameworks, and practical skills to generate unique artistic visions?
Select food items. Create thumbnail sketches, identifying areas where colored paper will be used for emphasis. Consider how positive and negative spaces are used to create composition.
Create a cross section of selected food items using kitchen knives or X-ACTO blades. (The food may need to be stored in plastic bags and refrigerated to preserve.)
Arrange the food items on newsprint paper. Consider composition and lighting to create consistency. Photograph the selected food items. Print photos to be used as a reference for future use.
Draw from life (if food items can be preserved) or reference images using graphite on drawing paper. Leave blank areas where emphasis of color will be created. Draw highlights and shadows on one part of the food using graphite.
Cut away the shape that will be drawn on colored paper with colored pencils.
Place colored paper under the shape that was cut out and trace the shape. Draw and color the shape on colored paper. Add value and dimension with colored pencils.
Align the colored paper drawing to fill in the cut out shape. Tape the colored paper drawing to the back of the drawing paper.
Flip the drawing paper over. Add additional details with graphite or colored pencils as needed. Analyze, select, and curate a final artwork for presentation and preservation. Reflect on the completed artwork.
