CONCEPTS
How do the curator's choices in presenting artworks shape the narrative and interpretation of an exhibition?
Brainstorm a “sense of self.” Create multiple branches on a mind map to explore important aspects of one’s identity. Define “metaphor.” Consider images or places where aspects of one’s identity can be shown through metaphor. Add visual metaphors to the mind map.
Learn to compose using the elements of art and principles of design. Practice creating dynamic compositions with a digital camera. Collaborate with peers to write three criteria for the Mini Rubric. Include criteria about “sense of self” gallery and photography skills.
Seek out interesting spaces and places to photograph in the surrounding campus and/or area. Take roughly 40–50 photographs of intriguing textures, colors, materials, objects, and scenery. Explore using metaphor through a range of image options to convey a sense of identity.
Select 20–25 photographs for consideration in the gallery. Arrange the photos into a contact sheet, and annotate them with notes and reflections. Analyze the images. Curate a selection of the best 10–15. Cross out images that won’t benefit the gallery.
Explore various digital programs used to curate virtual galleries. Determine which format is the best fit for the “sense of self” gallery.
Set up the gallery using a format of choice. Add at least eight photographs. Consider the order of the images from start to finish. Develop a title and brief description for each photo in the gallery. Write one exhibition label for the finished collection.
Review the Mini-Rubric resource. Analyze the images arranged within the virtual gallery, and self-assess using the rubric. Make final revisions to the image order and/or descriptions based on feedback. Adjust the Exhibition label to reflect edits and new additions.
Publish the virtual gallery to include the artist’s name and an exhibit title. Present the exhibit to peers and the school community.
