Concepts
What role do experimentation, practice, and persistence play in developing artistic skills and exploring ideas?
How does collected, preserved, or presented artwork cultivate an understanding of art as windows and mirrors of society?

Explore and analyze self-portraits created in different styles and media, either through independent research or as a class. With a partner, discuss observations on how self-portraits vary in style, media, and meaning over time. Share insights with the class. Use the Self-Portraits Through the Years resource for inspiration, if needed.
Observe examples of relief sculptures. Think about how raised and recessed areas are used to add detail to the imagery. Look at examples using both high and low relief to understand how each technique creates a sense of depth.
Take or find a profile photograph (a side view). Resize the image to fill an 8½″ x 11″ piece of printer paper and print the photo.
Create a ½-inch border around the edge of the white paper with a ruler and pencil. Outline the profile on the photo with a black marker. Trace the profile onto the paper using a pencil, placing the photo behind the white paper.
Create a ½-inch line to the outside of the profile line. Create additional lines ½-inch thick that connect to the border and touch the profile line. Fill in all these lines with dark marker.
Create concentric shapes ¼-inch away from each other using French curves and rulers. Number these areas starting with “1” closest to the profile.
Choose paper for each layer. Consider a color scheme for your work.
Place the top paper under the portrait image paper and paperclip together. Put a self-healing mat under the paper. Cut away all of the highest number sections through both sheets of paper with an X-ACTO knife. Repeat process with new colors and next highest numbered sections.
Turn cut papers upside-down. Flip them right-side up one at a time. Choose a color for the back of the artwork. Arrange and glue cardboard strips to the backside, starting with the highest numbered section. Attach to the background paper. Repeat with each layer.
