CONCEPTS:
· Correct use of contour line
· Beginning understanding of using line to create value
· Creating negative space within a work of art
Activate a whole page in your visual verbal journal; use contour line to draw an enlarged (close-up) view of a simple object. It should touch at all 4 sides of the rectangle. The object should also have some negative spaces within it. Keys were the subject matter in this example.
Create a line design in the negative space around the object. Use different types of lines to create different values. Leave the object (positive space) white. You should use at least 5 different line designs inside the negative space. These designs should be patterns.
Use the sharpie markers to create darker values using the different widths of the markers to change the line thickness and to color in areas of your work
Use this handout to choose a minimum of 3 zentangle patterns for your designs.
You will use this for BOTH the sketchbook assignment and the animal line design project.
Research animal images.
After your research choose the animal for your subject matter, you can use a photo of your own pet if you wish.
Create three small quick drawings to work out your idea before starting on the final design. Once you have chosen your animal image you will need to carefully study the image you have printed out or found online. Take the time to perceive all of the details in the animal's face that you will need to recreate.
Create an 18" x 24” rectangle for your final project on one of the pieces of drawing paper. Lightly in pencil transfer your most successful thumbnail sketch to the paper. Do not start inking at this point. Try to create even areas of positive and negative space. For the background you will need to choose a design that you can add at least 5 patterns to that emphasizes your focal point, the animal.
You will need to ink the contour lines with your thin sharpie. After the outlines are completed use an eraser to erase any stray marks. At this point begin creating different patterns with your thick and thin sharpies to mimic the values in the animals face an fill the background.
You must include a minimum of 3 of the patterns from the "ZenDoodle" Worksheet and then 2 or more of your own patterns (you can find these online or create your own).
