CREATING
Visualize and generate ideas for creating works of art.
Produce original two-dimensional works of art using a variety of media (e.g. pencil, marker, pastel, paint, printmaking materials, collage material, media arts).
Discover, define, and solve visual problems with increasing independence through experimentation with ideas, materials, and techniques.
CONCEPTS
How do artists transform their initial ideas into compelling artistic expressions?
How do visual and media arts influence our perceptions of the world and ourselves?
Examine the research behind doodling and its benefits. Discuss line as an element of art and pattern as a design principle used in doodling. Brainstorm doodle ideas through the completion of the Doodle Brainstorm worksheet.
Select a magazine or xerox portrait (human or animal). Cut out the portrait and glue it to the drawing paper.
Draw a continuation of the portrait using a black marker.
Outline each shape using markers.
Brush over the marker in each shape with a wet paintbrush until the color bleeds. Blend each color towards the center of the shape it outlines to create value changes. Allow the marker wash to dry completely when finished.
Draw doodle patterns over selected colored areas using a pencil, creating high contrasting patterns and variations in the design. Outline the doodles with a black marker. Use a minimum of 5 patterns. Your patterns can repeat, meaning you can use them more than once on the drawing.Â
