CREATING
Visualize and generate ideas for creating works of art.
Document process (e.g. journal-keeping, sketches, brainstorming lists).
Produce original two-dimensional artworks using a variety of media (e.g. pencil, markers, pastel, paint, printmaking materials, collage materials, media arts).
RESPONDING
Write responses to works of art through various approaches
CONCEPTS
What role do persistence and experimentation play in overcoming challenges in the art-making process?
How do artists transform their initial ideas into compelling artistic expressions?
Images of Adinkra cloth by the Ashanti people of Ghana
Look at and investigate examples of printed fabrics, such as Adinkra cloth. Discuss how the artists used shape, color, and repetition in their designs.
Experiment with relief printing using multiple alternative supplies. Discuss that artists often experiment and must be open to try new things even if it means making mistakes.
Design a repetitive pattern by applying the principles of design and some of the alternative supplies from experiments. Create multiple thumbnail sketches in the Thumbnail Sketches worksheet or in a sketchbook.
Share ideas with a partner. Discuss which plans may be the most interesting, least interesting, and most creative. Discuss how the principles of design may help some of the designs be more effective. Edit the plan accordingly and decide on a color scheme for the fabric.
Practice printing the design on the fabric using water-based relief printing ink to make proofs. Practice creating a repeating print. Create a final print that fills the area.
