Examine and analyze examples of abstract art and Fauvism. Audiences view a realistic image differently than an abstract image. Abstract the colors while the image is still recognizable.
Review and practice different oil pastel techniques. Label each technique for future reference.
Select an animal to draw. Draw the head of the animal lightly on pastel or mixed-media paper with a pencil. Fill the picture frame.
Fill the drawing with different colors, shapes, and designs using oil pastels to abstract the animal.
Apply a variety of oil pastel techniques to fill in the animal drawing. Refer to the practice sheet for examples.
Create a background using watercolor or oil pastels. Select colors and techniques that emphasize the animal.
Add final details to the animal in oil pastel once background work is done.
Include text, a quote or phrase, that connects to the image (optional).
