CookoutConnection

Our community lacked connection. Children our age went to different specialty schools, breaking ties that we rejuvenated on the fire and at the grill with CookoutConnection.

12/4/2022 - We created the flyers that we will pass out to homes. Changes to the flyer may be made in the future. We also tried to contact the clubhouse so we could book it, but they were closed during the weekend. They will open again tomorrow, on Monday.

12/7/2022 - The clubhouse itself was too expensive, being $300 which is over our budget. So, we opted to use the gazebo outside the clubhouse instead, as that area was free to use. We also printed out the flyers. We printed out 100 copies to send to people within our neighborhood. After school, Rohit and Amish went to Aldi’s to buy the groceries for the cookout. We split the budget in half, giving $100 for the groceries and the other $100 for the meat (which Harris will buy). We bought meat, buns, vegetables, cookies, chips, cheeses, and more, spending $92 of our $100.

12/8/2022 - Om handed out the flyers throughout the neighborhood, putting some on people's porches and hanging a few on signs and other public areas within the neighborhood.

12/10/2022 - The four of us met at Harris’ house at 11am to prep. We gathered all of our ingredients and items together and started cutting vegetables, seasoning and cubing / skewering meat, making the hamburgers, and cleaning up the two grills we will be using. Then, we took all of the prepped items to the gazebo near the clubhouse and set up. We set up all of the snacks and drinks, and had the fire pit on due to the somewhat cold weather. People came in as we were preparing the grill to cook. We had music as well with Harris’ speaker, as well as ping pong, volleyball, tennis, and more.

Our goal was to connect our community's kids again. We live in an area in which most students go to specialty centers following middle and high school. As such, we thought it was best for us to rekindle our old and make new connections with the people around us. To do so, we started Cookout Connection -- a group project funded by a grant in addition to our own money to make Twin Hickory the connected community it once was.
