All About IB Career-related Program — and HHS IB Expansion

In the 1980’s, when IB, in the form of the Diploma Program, was expanding to the United States, it was marketed as an elite, exclusive program. As the 21st century dawned, however, IB took a new path, a path of inclusion, access, equity, and diversity. With this new path, they added the Primary Years Program for grades K-5, revised the Middle Years Program (grades 6-10), and innovated the Career-related Program. As an IB World School since 1995, Henrico High School, already a school with a proud heritage of diversity and a strong IB program with both MYP and DP, is proud to announce a triple-pronged IB expansion so that we further embody the IB ideals of inclusion, access, and equity.

• We are expanding the offerings of IB MYP courses to all Henrico students. In their course offerings, students in grades 9 and 10 will have the option of MYP Honors. We began with English and history in 2021-22, and have expanded in 2022-23  to world language, mathematics, and sciences, and some of our art offerings

• All Henrico High School teachers are being trained in IB pedagogy so that even courses not specifically labeled as MYP will offer the benefits of an IB education of internationalism, inquiry-based instruction, and character education.

• We have our second class of CP students starting this year.

• We will be graduating our first Career Program Students this year and are aiming at 100% achievement of the certificate!

The IB Career-related Program is a hybrid program that offers the rigor of the IB Diploma Program and the job readiness and practicality of Career and Technical Education. With Virginia’s and Henrico County’s dedication to workplace readiness and career planning, the CP is a perfect addition to Henrico High School. Students enter the program as juniors, completing their CP study as seniors.  Like the MYP and DP, offered at Henrico, the CP model starts with the student and radiates out from character education to teaching and learning to the real-life CP core of Personal and Professional Skills, Service Learning, Language education, and the Reflective Project tp Diploma Program studies to Career and Technical Education all within the context of international-mindedness.
