Preparing for GYSA

Summer 2018

To get ready for the exciting school year ahead, it is imperative that you spend time this summer relaxing, enjoying nature, connecting with friends and family, and otherwise enjoying your life. It is also necessary for you to keep your mind sharp so you can jump right into middle school on the right foot. So, we have put together some reading and activities for you to complete before we meet again in August.

We will be reading a few cross-curricular selections to get ready for our journey together. Most importantly, there are mindsets and principles we look for our students to possess and will always strive to help them cultivate further.

These include:

  • Growth Mindset
  • Determination
  • Positivity
  • Collaboration
  • Kindness
  • Perseverance
  • Integrity
  • Self-Reliance
  • Organizational skills

Summer Journal:

Your summer reading responses should all be kept in your Summer Journal. This can be on Google Drive, or in a notebook; it is your choice. We encourage you to use this journal to write or create beyond what we’ve required, as well. You could jot down your thoughts about your experiences this summer, write a short story, create art, or anything else that you think would be a good way to stay active as a thinker, a reader, and a writer.

Please plan to purchase the following books for your summer reading. If you need assistance doing so, please contact Gifted Programs at 652-3765.

  1. Get Organized Without Losing It by Janet S. Fox.
  2. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park
