Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) are one of the most BIOSAFETY-CRITICAL items of equipment in any biological laboratory. When USED AND MAINTAINED CORRECTLY, BSCs reduce the risk that arises from the handling of hazardous biological agents, by protecting the operator and the environment from exposure to infectious aerosols.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
This section explores the Principles of Operation that enable Class I, Class II and Class III BSCs to protect the operator, other laboratory users and the environment from exposure to infectious aerosols.
BSC AIR EXTRACTION SYSTEMS
This section explores four mechanisms that allow air to be discharged from a BSC.
INSTALLATION & COMMISSIONING
This section explores fundamental consideration that must be taken when equipping a laboratory with BSCs to ensure that those BSCs can meet their performance requirements in situ.
TESTING & VALIDATION
This section explores the testing and maintenance requirements for BSCs that must be met during day-to-day operation and planned preventive maintenance activities.
MONITORING OF OPERATION & ALARMS
This section explores what aspects of BSC operation must be monitored continuously to ensure safe operation.
OPERATOR ERGONOMICS
This section explores good operator posture, including why it is important and how to achieve it.
GOOD WORKING PRACTICE
This section explores good working practices that must be followed by an operator to ensure safe and efficient operation of a BSC.
FUMIGATION
This section explores how fumigation with toxic gases can be used to chemically decontaminate a BSC.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
This section explores fundamental procedures that a BSC operator must follow in case of an emergency that may compromise the safe operation of a BSC.
The course is hosted on a Learning Management System (LMS). Learners are granted access to the course via a unique User ID and Login. The LMS monitors a learner's progress and provides a visual ongoing measure of progress.
The Course is modular, comprising ten modules that contain a series of shorter lessons. It offers flexible study by allowing learners to complete the course over a period of one month, module by module, rather than in one continuous period of study. Learners study the modules in sequence and navigation also allows learners to easily move backwards and forwards through the modules and lessons to repeat specific areas. The course closes with a summary that includes references to source material and a glossary of terms used.
The course is accompanied by a 35 multiple choice question assessment. On successful completion of the assessment a certificate of completion is available to download from the LMS.
This course is self-guided study, which means you can learn at your own pace, at a time that suits you.
