Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) are one of the most BIOSAFETY-CRITICAL items of equipment in any biological laboratory. Cabinets come in three classes, the most commonly used are classes I and II. This course covers the daily use and testing by laboratory staff that is considered good user practice.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
This section explores the Principles of Operation that enable Class I and Class II BSCs to protect the operator, other laboratory users and the environment from exposure to infectious aerosols.
OPERATOR ERGONOMICS
This short section explores good operator posture, including why it is important and how to achieve it.
MONITORING OF OPERATIONS & ALARMS
This section explores what aspects of BSC operation must be monitored continuously to ensure safe operation.
GOOD WORKING PRACTICES
This section explores good working practices that must be followed by an operator to ensure safe and efficient operation of a BSC.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
This section explores fundamental procedures that a BSC operator must follow in case of an emergency that may compromise the safe operation of a BSC.
The course is hosted on a Learning Management System (LMS). Learners are granted access to the course via a unique User ID and Login. The LMS monitors a learner's progress and provides a visual ongoing measure of progress.
The course is modular, comprising six modules that contain a series of shorter lessons. It offers flexible study by allowing learners to complete the course over a period of one month, module by module, rather than in one continuous period of study. Learner’s study the modules in sequence and navigation also allows learners to easily move backwards and forwards through the modules and lessons to repeat specific areas. The course closes with a glossary of terms used.
The course is accompanied by a 20 multiple choice question assessment, On successful completion of the assessment a certificate of completion is available to download from the LMS.
