Following the Treaty of Paris, British colonists spread westward and claimed settlements in First Nation territory. First Nations did not take this lightly. In Ohio, for example, both the Delaware and Shawnee nations resisted violently to assert their right to the territory.

Lord Jeffrey Amherst created a policy which sought to repress the Nations the area. The policy included distributing blankets infected with smallpox. This decimated the surrounding Nations and targeted the older and younger members (including clan mothers, chiefs, and elders).

The chief of the Ottawas, Pontiac, led a united resistance against the English settlers. The battles against British posts led to the deaths of more than 2000 settlers and the destruction of their settlements.
