Dear Families,
As we approach the end of the 2023-2024 school year, I can’t help but reflect on the many joyful experiences that have placed smiles on our faces. From the first day of school to now, it has been an incredible journey filled with growth, learning, and connections.
As we enter into the last month of school, I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, not only on how fast the year went, as does life, but also on the friendships made, the challenges overcome and the memories that were created.
I also want to thank our families for sharing your children with us, your support, and walking through each day as a team to do the very best we can for each child.
Before I sign off for this school year, I wanted to share a change that we have discussed as a team, to better serve our families. This year, at both our Kindergarten Celebration, and our fifth-grade Moving-Up-Day ceremony, siblings are invited to attend.
Our Kindergarten Celebration is June 7th at 1:00 PM and it typically lasts less than one hour. Please keep in mind that our classrooms will still be in full swing learning. If siblings attend, it is likely that they will be missing new instruction. While we do encourage you to consider keeping siblings in their classrooms and for parents to take this time to enjoy the ceremony, if parents wish to have siblings attend, they are welcome.
Our Moving Up Day Ceremony will be held on the last day of school, June 21st at 9:30 AM. Please note that this is a change in the start time than what was originally printed in the district calendar. On this day, classes are working to get personal belongings packed up and preparing to close the year. Siblings will not be missing new instruction. In years past, many parents took their fifth-grade child home after the MUD ceremony. This year, we are asking students to stay. They will use the remainder of the day to sign yearbooks and enjoy time together.
***Important- Please note that if you do wish to have a sibling attend either ceremony, you will need to write a note to their teacher granting them permission so that we honor your wishes.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger
UPES Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to share important information regarding best practices when charging devices equipped with Lithium-Ion batteries, such as cell phones, ipads, laptops and chromebooks. While these batteries are generally safe when used correctly, they can present a potential hazard if not handled properly. Here are some recommendations for safety tips:
Use a Solid Surface: When charging, place the device on a solid surface. Avoid charging on soft surfaces like beds, couches, or pillows, as these can trap heat and pose a fire hazard.
Limit Charging Time: Most batteries fully charge within one to three hours. Avoid overcharging by unplugging the device once it's fully charged.
Feel for Heat: If the device becomes unusually hot during charging, unplug it immediately and move it to a safe location outdoors away from flammable materials.
Consider Not Charging Devices While Unattended: Devices should not be left charging without supervision. It's important to keep an eye on them during the charging process.
These precautions are essential to minimize the risk of battery-related accidents. Many of you have heard and/or read about hazards of lithium-ion batteries that are found in many products on the market today, including our Chromebooks, cell phones and ipads. Making you aware of safe charging practices is a priority to us so that you can follow them and keep your family safe.
Thank you for prioritizing safety and awareness when it comes to technology use.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger

Kits for 2024 - 25
For parents who are interested in ordering their child(ren)'s school supplies from 1st Day School Supplies for the coming school year, you may do this using the QR Code below or can go to this link: 1st Day School Order form . If Union Pleasant received 100 or more orders, First Day School will donate supplies to needy families in our building. The link will be accessible until July 1, 2024.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING
Reminder, in order to volunteer for school events such as field day and Cave of the Winds, you MUST complete volunteer training every year. Volunteer training this year can be found in your Operoo account under the "Form Library" tab. Training MUST be completed AT LEAST one month prior to the event for approval to attend the event or volunteer.
END OF YEAR EVENTS
There are several end-of-year events that parents can participate in and volunteer for. A reminder - If you are volunteering or attending an end-of-year field trip, YOU MUST complete the volunteer training EVERY year. Information is listed below for how to complete this. If you are interested in volunteering please email ltn46@hotmail.com and your information will be shared with the committee chair for each event.

4th Grade Mumford/Genesee Country Village Field Trip - June 14

Our final PTSA meeting will be held on June 6 at 3:15 PM (to hopefully avoid school and spring sport conflicts). There are several open committee positions available for next year that will be discussed during this meeting. Without PTSA participation and leadership by some amazing parent volunteers, many of the events the PTSA runs and sponsors each year will not be possible. If you have any interest in leading a committee, please attend this meeting or reach out to Lynn Mason at ltn46@hotmail.com

Notes from the Nurse
Medication Pick Up:
If your child has medication in the Health Office, please pick up the medication by the end of the school year. Medications not picked up by the end of the school year will be disposed of.
Preparing for 2024-2025 School Year:
New York State law requires a health examination for all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K or K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grade. The examination must be completed by a New York State licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner and on the NYS Health Appraisal Form. Completed Health Appraisal forms can by emailed or faxed to the Health Office.
If your child will be taking a medication during the upcoming school year, medication forms for both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications must be signed by the provider and parent annually. The parent must sign the medication permission form. Medication must remain in the properly labeled pharmacy or original OTC container. Parents or guardians must personally deliver all medication to the school health office. Medication forms are available on the district website or may be obtained from the school health office. Your physician may use his or her own form if desired.
Students 11 years or older entering grade 6 are required to have one dose of the Tdap vaccine.
Staff News:
Congratulations to Mr. Ebsary and his wife, with the birth of their son, Everett, in May!
Parent Volunteers - New this Year:
All volunteers must complete the online training each year, even if you have been trained in the past. This includes class field trip volunteers and helping with holiday parties. Instructions are now found in the Form Library of your Operoo account. This includes the link to the training along with information on registering for an account. We will need this done this well in advance of the date(s) you are planning to volunteer, as they must also be Board-of-Education approved before being a volunteer. Thank you.
Attendance Reminder
Anytime your child is absent from school, a paper note must be sent to school with your child upon their return, stating the reason for the absence. If you do not turn in the note, the absence will become an unexcused absence. Parents, please check your child's report card for any unexcused absences and send in a note for those date(s). If you are uncertain of the date(s), please contact Margaret Duszynski in the Attendance Office in the morning at (716) 646-3288.
Please call the Attendance Office each day that your child is absent. Our phone number is (716) 646-3288. A message can be left at anytime school is not open. Please do not call the main office or email the teacher to report an absence.
If your child(ren) will be absent because of a vacation, please fill out a vacation form two weeks prior to your departure. These forms are available in the main office, on our district website or click on this link: Family Vacation Form .
