The debate team is an interscholastic, high-level debate program at the middle school level. The debate team is open to all grades and all students who are serious when learning about research, argumentation, communication, and public speaking skills. Students compete against other middle schools in Howard County at the March county-wide debate.
A resolution is chosen and each school is assigned a pro or con side to defend. Students prepare for the debate by researching the resolution and preparing speeches along with possible rebuttals. It is challenging work, but a very rewarding experience that gives students the skills they need now and in the future. It is my hope to produce a strong group of serious and committed students dedicated to learning all they can about a topic and becoming effective and formidable public speakers. If you are a serious student, like to argue and debate, and are interested in public speaking and research, the LKMS debate team is the place for you.
MEETING TIMES AND REQUIREMENTS: Meets 3 to 4 times per month during various periods of the day. Debate students must make up all the work from missed classes and have a serious work ethic. Research and work on speeches will also have to be completed at home. You must adhere to deadlines!! If you do join debate then you should limit your participation in other seminars due to the frequency in which debate meets.
Debate is divided into groups Beginning, Advanced and/or Travel Debate.
