Joanne Webber is born in New Zealand. She is a Christchurch based artist.
Webber often uses irony to comment on events, as seen through her use of kiwiana icons and a play on words which produces quirky and thought provoking works. With an interest in fine detail, her work is defined by the use of bold design which dance on the canvas and draws the eye around the scene.
“I have a strong commitment to the conservation of the natural world, including all waterways including the ocean, and this is often present in my work in one way or another.”
Joanne has exhibited throughout New Zealand, as well as overseas, including an exhibition in the Chelsea Art District of New York City. Her works are held in collections in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy (Benetton Collection).
Joanne’s work is defined by the use of bold colours which dance on the canvas and draw the eye around the scene. Inspiration for artwork comes from a diversity of places such as advertising, history and an interest in and concern for the natural world.
“As an artist I feel honoured and fortunate enough to be able to express my identity and culture through my art. Using the form of hei-tiki I can express and acknowledge my mixed heritage - Māori (Ngāpuhi - Te Rarawa, Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri) and NZ European.”
She has been nominated for several awards in New Zealand, including the Christchurch Art Awards 2016 (final 20), a finalist in the Peter Doig Marlborough Art Award 2016, a finalist in the International Clifton Art Awards 2015, and a finalist in the Impressions Art Awards 2014.
