Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to 2022! School starts at 8:50am and finishes at 3pm.
This year we did something different and chose an artist from our local community of Mount Roskill.
Valerie Schuler is an aspiring artist that we are very privileged to name ourselves after her this year.
Valerie is the artist behind Ladybird Prints. She was born in Germany, grew up in France, but came to New Zealand and has made NZ her home. Her and her loving family live in Mount Roskill, Auckland.
Valerie: "I don't have formal fine arts training, my artistic journey has been a long and varied one. My father was an art historian and and I spent my entire childhood being dragged around art galleries and museums around Europe. My mother was a hippy, whose colourful artworks, crocheting and macrame plant hangers could be found throughout our house. I went to school at Michael Park Rudolf Steiner school, where a big part of the curriculum was arts based - stain glass window making, wood carving, photography, ceramics, painting, sculpture, screen printing, we did it all! I've also worked as a colour consultant for a paint company, which gave me a good understanding of colours and how they work."
Her work is nature inspired, - "there's just so much beauty and inspiration in this beautiful country." It is also influenced by traditional Maori art and Koru patterns. Some of her favourite NZ artists are Don Binney, Hayley King (Flox) and Rakai Karaitiana.
