What to Expect

A Day at MSS PE

  • Students have 3 minutes to get from their previous class down to our locker rooms. They are required to check our location board so they can report to the proper area for class that day. Once in the locker room, they have an additional 5 minutes to change into their uniforms and put on their straps and heart rate monitors.

  • In their space, teachers are stationed with their ipads running and a specific pre-warm up written, as well as daily Time in Zone requirements, on their travelling dry erase boards. Students have anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes to begin earning time in zone for that day, provided they are motivated to get to class quickly.

  • Approximately 8 minutes after they left their previous class, students are asked to get into their squads for quick attendance. Depending on their unit and where they are within the unit, they will receive instructions for the days activity, or they will be guided through a more specific whole group warm up that lasts anywhere between 3 and 8 minutes.

    • Warm ups are geared towards each of the different fitness zones. Teachers provide modifications to make warm ups more or less challenging so all students can work at a pace comfortable to them. Intensity, time, and type are all discussed and implemented in different ways.

  • After warm ups, instructions are either given or reiterated, and students are off to activities for the day. Throughout class, students have the opportunity to check progress towards goals, teachers are able to provide feedback and strategies to enhance their exercise, or perhaps to lessen intensity because of heart rate levels. Some examples of units and activities that we provide within our curriculum can be found below.

Units and Activities

Exposure to a variety of fitness modalities including:

  • Use of cardio equipment including rowing machines and stationary bicycles

  • Plyometrics and Calisthenics (body weight exercises)

  • Eagle Fit: Fitness growth for all students

- Personalized learning relative to student’s present levels of performance

- Students performing below standards receive modified workouts, strategies, and small group instruction to foster growth towards meeting standards.

- Students performing at or above standards receive enrichment through workouts with varying intensities, durations of time, and structures to facilitate continued growth.

- Students are given growth targets based on baseline fitness scores.

- Students with higher baseline scores are expected to grow a smaller percentage, relative to students with lower baseline scores.
