Natural Resources & Environmental Management
Diversity Equity Inclusivity
Mission Statement
We are an action group of students, staff, and faculty co-creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive NREM space by acknowledging truths, and working to change the narrative of our department for the benefit of everyone within it.
Mission
We are an action group of students, staff, and faculty of NREM who want to make our department a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive space. We believe in taking action in co-creating healthy work environments and relationships so we can do the best work possible in addressing natural resources and environmental management. To overcome systemic injustices that are present in our society (racism, discrimination, sexism, disparity, etc.), we must actively acknowledge and fight to empower marginalized groups in our communities and create new equitable systems. We acknowledge racism’s role in the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and ongoing colonial legacies that persist today. As our department continues to study the natural resources, ecosystems, and socioeconomic connections of Hawaiʻi, we strive to become better stewards of this place. In order to uphold our university values, specifically striving to be a Hawaiian place of learning, sustainability, and community and diversity, it is imperative that Native Hawaiian knowledge and values are central to our work and community. Our action group aims to assess our department’s actions (or inactions) in addressing systemic societal issues, and develop new recommendations, standards, and actions. This document serves to guide our commitment to fighting injustices and hold us accountable, and serves as an example to our university and the wider community.
