At UH Mānoa, a pre-major (such as Pre-Psychology) refers to a student who has selected a specific major but must first meet certain admission requirements, such as prerequisite courses or a minimum GPA, before officially entering the program.
Although both pre-majors and exploratory pathway students are not fully declared in a major, their paths are different:
Pre-majors are working toward a specific program and follow a structured path to become eligible for admission.
Exploratory students have not yet committed to a specific major (in most cases) and are encouraged to explore different options with the help of academic advisors.
Exploratory pathways are supported by the Mānoa Advising Center (MAC), while pre-majors are advised through the college or department that houses the intended major (please see below):
