The Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate Native Hawaiian Drug Free Program (KSBE) created the Lōkahi Wheel to teach students about the Hawaiian worldview and the components of our lives related to wellness and wellbeing. KSBE states, “In order to maintain harmony and balance in our lives, we must care for every aspect of what makes us who we are.”
The Lōkahi Wheel is a circle comprised of 6 domains rooted in the Hawaiian concept of Lōkahi (unity, balance, harmony). The Lōkahi Wheel is grounded in the Hawaiian worldview that emphasizes the harmonious connection between the mind, body, spirit, and the earth. The six domains of the Lōkahi Wheel are: Kuleana (Responsibility), Manaʻo (Mind), Naʻau (Emotions), Kino (Body), Piliʻuhane (Spiritual), and ʻOhana (Family).
In this instance, the Lōkahi Wheel is provided as an example of a kanaka maoli paradigm for a culturally-grounded framework to self-care planning for students at a Hawai'i University, it is not intended to be utilized with individuals with no roots in or pilina (connection) to Hawai'i.
The Lōkahi Wheel Self-Care Plan (LWSCP) is a tool we developed to frame our wellness practice using the six domains of KSBEʻs Lōkahi Wheel. Every semester of their field work, social work field education students create their own LWSCP that addresses all six components of the Lōkahi Wheel. In this practice students reflect on the semester ahead and document what they could commit to do to ensure their wellbeing and self-care.
ʻUmia ka hanu! Hoʻokāhi ka umauma ke kīpoʻohiwi i ke kīpoʻohiwi.
"Hold the breath! Walk abreast, shoulder to shoulder."
Be of one accord, as in exerting every effort to lift a heavy weight to the shoulder and to keep together in carrying it along.
