Tech Crew is an active, fun, and student run part of the Haverford Drama community. Tech is responsible for Set design, Carpentry, Paints, Props, Sound, and Lights. Below, there are descriptions of these departments, as well as contact information for the leaders.
Don't be afraid to reach out with questions on how to get involved!
Do you like working with your hands? Building things? Using tools? If you do then carpentry is the place for you! Carpentry is responsible for building all of our amazing set pieces, this can range from things as simple as doors, to entire rooms! Almost all of this work is done before the show, allowing the members of this department to participate in run crew, as well as other aspects of show week tech.
If you are interested in joining Carpentry or have any questions, contact Vivien (vheckendorn17@haverfordsd.net) and Anthony (adigiantomasso-saling73@haverfordsd.net), our Carpentry heads.
The Paints department does a plethora of things, but the most important one is (like the name implies) painting. By painting, the Paints department works hard to add color and texture to our sets, all while bringing the production to life and giving it a real feeling. No prior experience is needed to participate in paints, and they are always willing to teach and allow you to get involved.
If you are interested in Paints or have any questions, reach out to our paints department head Kathryn (krusso38@haverfordsd.net)!
The Haverford Drama Club Props Department makes, curates, stores, and organizes props for each performance. They are responsible for giving the realistic feeling to a set and bringing it to life. Whether its adding furniture to a room, or creating props for the actors to use directly they have done it. If you're creative or think you want a little bit of everything, join props! Here, you get to put a whole arsenal of skills (in art, construction, and design) to use. If you don't have any experience, no worries! We'll teach you.
If you are interested or have any questions about Props, reach out to Lilli (lschugsta86@haverfordsd.net) and Asiah (aswain85@haverfordsd.net)!
The sound department designs the sound for the shows and runs the microphones, monitors, and speakers. Whether there is a live pit or a backtrack, it's their job to make sure that things run smoothly sound-wise for both the audience and the actors. At the board during shows they follow along closely, making sure the sound is cued correctly in each scene, and that microphones are unmuted for the specific actors on stage. Backstage they put on actor's mics and manage microphone changes between scenes. Throughout the process there is always troubleshooting and reworking, because each show has different needs. Though challenging at times, the puzzle is a part of the fun of their job!
With any interest or questions for the Sound, reach out to Ella (ebush02@haverfordsd.net)!
As one of the smaller departments within the production, the lights crew does the majority of their work during tech week. With the size of 3-4 people, the department shifts people based on each show to its varying positions. These positions typically include a light board operator, and two spotlights, and occasionally an additional member for larger shows/training opportunities.
If you have questions or want to get involved in lights, reach out to the lights department head Matt (mrouleau55@haverfordsd.net)!
Run Crew is the team that actually “runs the show.”
From moving set pieces on and off stage to making sure every transition happens smoothly, run crew plays a key role during performances. It’s the biggest time commitment in tech—you’ll be expected at all rehearsals during tech week and a few hours before each show. This schedule also applies to anyone running sound or lights, though they’ll be assigned specific technical roles instead of moving sets. Anyone involved in tech is encouraged to participate in run crew, and if you're interested in becoming an Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) in the future, gaining experience on run is a must. Some shows may have a cap on run crew members—this will be announced when signups officially open. Please note: you can only be on run crew if you're available for the full run of the show, including strike!
