Welcome to Year 9 Maths
Half Term 1
Summary
In this unit we will learn about how place value is the foundation of all of the work we do.
We will look at the significance of the number system and the history of the decimal number system.
We will build on the formal methods of addition and subctraction that have been learned at KS3 by considering the impact that different number systems have on calculations, as well as problems relating to perimeter, time, money, the median and range.
Half Term 2
Summary
In this unit we deepen our understanding of place value by applying it to context relating to multiplication and division.
In particular, we look at the significance of place value in metric measures.
We go on to establish a common language around factors and multiples and apply our skills in problems relating to area and the mean.
Half Term 3
Half Term 4
Summary
In Unit 4 we move our focus to fractions and percentages.
We will look at calculator and non-calculator methods for calculating with fractions and percentages of amounts, as well as calculating with non-integer values.
This will be underpinned by a secure understanding of the equivalence between fractions, decimals and percentages.
Half Term 5
Summary
Unit 5 sees in our introduction to Algebra.
We begin by formalising existing knowledge on the order of operations and the impact this has on algebra, whilst developing a common set of vocabulary and notation.
We will introducte the laws that allow for multiple representations of the same expressions and apply these in our work on forming expressions and solving equations.
We will go on to apply our new knowledge of algebra in the context of problems covered in Units 1 - 4.
Half Term 6
Summary
In Unit 6 we revisit conversions between metric measures, as covered in Unit 2, and go on to look at conversions involving time as well as imperial and compound measures.
This unit concludes with the study of statistical diagrams. In this section we will look at visual representations of content covered in Units 1 - 5, including looking at the impact of changes on our conclusions.
