Using cardboard, I created a coffin with a skeleton in it because the time is now, it is October, otherwise known from online communities as Spooktober. The Communities of Reddit are really the ones to thank for this Internet side of Halloween. A few years ago when the original memes were out, somebody decided to take one of the dead memes, and turn it into a skeleton style mem. Then the tradition of mostly Skeleton memes for Halloween was born. I thought some people would like to know about the cultural side of this project.
During this process, I learned the process of design sketching. No joke, my father has some skills in the art industry, as well as the engineering industry. He showed me that you have to plan everything before hand, everything. So he had me draw some designs and then he had me draw some 3 centimeters boxes around the original drawing. Then I would cut them out and voila, sketch tools. I would then sketch the coffin's door onto the piece of cardboard, and glue the the rest on the paper down.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because the coffin was planned for at each step, the design, shape, and décor. I made it from an amazon box, scrap paper, and hot glue. I made it with my own creativity.
A challenge I overcame on this project was the sizing and measurements. I was able to do it by grabbing my ruler. I then angled the ruler to match the side it was as the opposite side. I then double checked the measurements because I doubt myself when it comes to stuff offline. Turns put I did over estimate them though so I cut small bits off of the side edges.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the amount of content in the project. The reason why I would change it is because it was lacking a lot of detail and lore (story and stuff). I would add some sort of background, or perhaps some extra skeletons having a party. It is Spooktober after all. Once again, this is stuff really Internet cultured people will understand this really.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in decoration design. This is because of the décor I created, groups like Party City and Spirits Halloween need someone to supply them with décor for Halloween, so I work for the company that supplies them.
These are the paper strips I cut out for the cardboard cutting.
This was me tracing the extra piece for the coffin.
These are the decorated pieces of the coffin. It is going to be a shelf decoration after all.
This is the coffin from the right side. It holds the lid, and one of the sides of the coffin.
This is the other side of the coffin, as shown in the picture at the top. The coffin holds its remains still inside. I wonder why though?
