Introductory First Aid for First Grade

The HHS Medical Academy Internship students recently visited BBE and CES to present introductory first aid training sessions. The first-grade students were taught how and when to call 911 and how to control bleeding. This collaborative effort gave the medical internship students experience with the pediatric patient population and developmentally appropriate patient teaching. All of the students, big and small, did an excellent job!

It's National School Breakfast Week!

School breakfast provides a healthy and energizing start to the day for students. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:

· Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math

· Score higher on standardized tests

· Have better concentration and memory

· Be more alert

· Maintain a healthy weight

We encourage families to take advantage of the healthy choices available for school breakfast and remember that breakfast and lunch meals are free to all students this school year.

The HHS Speech and Debate Team hosted the Big Questions Debate Event this month. Congratulations to our top three finishers: Keegan Hembree, 3rd Place (not pictured); G.G. Stout, Runner-Up by one speaker point; and Samantha Simmons, Champion.

FEB kicked off celebrating Read Across America by guessing the Masked Reader

Homeroom classrooms competed in a pop bottle character challenge for Read Across America week. Each homeroom sent a pop bottle decorated as a book character to be judged. The winner was Ms. Cadence O'Neill from Mrs. Wallace's 2nd-grade class! Congratulations!

Book character day at FEB was a success for Read Across America week! We found Waldo AND Carmen Sandiego roaming the halls!

For Read Across America week, all students at FEB read the classic novel Mr. Popper's Penguins together at lunch as one book, one school!

HIS got creative this year for Read Across America on March 2. Students dressed up in their favorite Dr. Seuss-inspired outfits. Classes were able to listen to stories being read aloud thanks to a variety of people's generosity. Our superintendent, mayor, State Representative, and other adults recorded themselves reading and shared these with us. Hartselle High School's future teachers and drama students also took the time to video and share stories. We are grateful to everyone who made this day special.

Crestline Elementary School celebrated literacy and reading last week with help from Short the Squirrel. During the week, students dressed like Short and wore a superhero cape because reading is their superpower. Students also read books about famous Americans, influential athletes, silly books, and their favorite books and then dressed up according to the book they read. In addition to the reading fun, students competed in a Read Across America Word UNscramble, where they created as many words as possible from a given phrase in three minutes. The winner of this year's Word UNscramble is Mrs. Swann's class. Finally, the cafeteria served everybody's favorite, green eggs, and ham!

Barkley Bridge celebrated the importance of reading during Read Across America! Mayor Randy Garrison kicked off the week with a read-aloud and having all students recite the Reading Pledge. This was accomplished school-wide through a virtual Google Meet. Virtual meets of live readers were scheduled each day for “stop, drop, and listen along” segments including the following stakeholders: HCS Board Member Daxton Maze, Chamber of Commerce President Missy Evans, City Councilmen Virginia Alexander, HCS Superintendent Dr. DeeDee Jones, Police Chief Justin Barley, Hartselle Municipal Judge Ta’Kish Gholston, HCS Director of Curriculum Dena Mayfield, and our long term volunteer and substitute Janadah Sartin. Pre-recorded stakeholders also shared amazing reads, whether State Representative Scott Stadthagen was reading from the Capitol steps or Tiffany Little, owner of Gold Star Therapies, using impressive graphics to excite young readers.

HIS Principal Earon Sheats visited each 4th-grade class, reading and easing nervous jitters of the future transition into a different school for 5th grade. Students were ecstatic to listen to HHS Basketball Coach Faron Key and HHS Football Coach Bryan Moore read and speak about the importance of player/student teamwork, commitment, perseverance, sportsmanship, character, and accountability.

Students dressed up each day with a fun theme! Among the many, Wednesday was Lorax Day. Classes received materials to make wildflower seed balls to attract pollinators planted by students later in designated areas around BBE. 2nd-4th grade sowed lettuce, tomato, and sunflower seeds indoors to transplant during our next outdoor classroom workday.

A variety of optional contests celebrated many students' creativity and resourcefulness at the end of each day: 3Dimensional Art, Book Blurb Commercials, Hartselle Whoville Writing, & Seussical Musical Instrument. Students turned in daily Reading Raffle Tickets for each 20-minute increment of reading accomplished. By the end of the week, BBE students completed a combined total of over 23,869 minutes of nightly READING!
