Elementary Statistics syllabus

By Leti Contreras @ Hartnell College

Welcome!

I am looking forward to meeting you and working with you to reach your educational goals. I have been teaching at Hartnell College since 2004 and teaching math in this community is truly my dream job. I urge to reach out for help often. I strive to empower you to reach you full potential by providing you with an inclusive learning environment where everyone's background and skills are valued.

Some online learners start classes feeling isolated but not in this class! I want you to think of this class as a community. Each person in our community has the same objective: to learn. This class is designed to have you learn in community with your peers. I strongly believe that every student has strengths and experiences that enhance our learning environment and we will all benefit from each other's contributions. When you're a member of a community, you can rely upon others for help and support when you need it, but you must also be willing to step up and contribute regularly, as well! Let’s work together to make this term great for everyone!

I look forward to meeting you via Zoom on MONDAY, August 24 at 7:00 PM for our orientation.

Sincerely, Leti Contreras

How does this course work?

While MAT 13 is a fully online class, MAT 213-Lab for Statistics will have live class sessions via Zoom on Fridays 7:50 AM to 11:00 AM (with some breaks of course!). During these sessions, we will collaborate on activities that will reinforce the course material you learned over the week. If you are not able to attend every Friday, I will be recording the Q&A/feedback portion of the class and you can make up the group activities by completing them individually.

Also, this course follows a weekly schedule and is facilitated by -- a real person! Each week you'll interact with your peers in several collaborations that will occur in real time, and complete a series of activities and assignments before and after the group collaborations. I am mindful that online students may have restrictive schedules and perhaps are even juggling multiple obligations including a job, a family and other classes. Yet, you are the only ones that can determine if this type of schedule will work for you.

Please complete this Google Survey as soon as possible regarding your availability so that I can form groups based on when people can work together.

  • This is a 4-unit college level course plus a 1-unit lab; so you can expect to commit about 10-14 hours a week on our content.

  • In this course, there are 7 modules that contain 30 units. Within each unit, there are assignments and collaboration components. Some of the Collaboration sessions include an assignment called a Preparation that should be done before the collaboration and then another assignment called an Exercise (basically your homework) to be done after the Collaboration.

  • Every unit has an Exercises component; whereas only some of the units have a preparation. The Preparation and Exercises will be done individually.

  • Collaboration sessions for this course are critical! In a Collaboration session, you will work with your group online to complete the material. For this, you will be using Zoom (video conferencing software) and a courseware platform called RealizeIt. These collaborations will be recorded and made available to me for review. I will then give a grade to your group based upon your group's answers.

    • If you miss a collaboration, please let your group and me know so that we can workout an alternative path for that particular unit.
